As director, Jan Lochman aims to recruit junior researchers capable of securing prestigious grants

Jan Lochman was appointed director of the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, on September 30, 2025, by the dean of the faculty, Tomáš Kašparovský.

doc. Mgr. Jan Lochman, Ph.D.

Jan Lochman studied biochemistry at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, where he earned his Mgr. degree in 2002, Ph.D. in 2006, and habilitation in 2017. He has worked at the Department of Biochemistry since 2006—first as a research fellow, then as an assistant professor, and since 2017 as an associate professor. He teaches courses such as Plant Biochemistry, DNA Diagnostics, and Methods of Biochemical Research, and supervises numerous bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses. His scientific research focuses on molecular biological and biochemical approaches to plant defense responses, protein expression, and the development of DNA diagnostic methods, including analyses on DNA chips and NGS sequencing.

Plans for leading the department

As the new director, Jan Lochman wants to recruit junior researchers capable of securing prestigious European and Czech grants: “We also want to advance teaching so that our programs meet current market demands as well as the needs of students,” Lochman concludes. His goals also include creating special conditions to support the development of highly motivated students.
